FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I've been to other therapist before, how are you different?

Unlike other therapists, I incorporate your mind, your body and your soul/spirit into the therapeutic process.  Unfortunately, most therapist don't know how to work with the body and soul so they only focus on your mind.  You have to learn how to move your own energy so that in the future you'll be your own healer.

When will I start to feel better?

You'll begin to feel better after your first session.  I promise.  As soon as you begin to understand why you feel the way you do and learn ways on how to change the way you feel, the healing begins.

What can I expect to happen during the first session?

You'll fill out some paperwork and if you don't know where or how to begin, I'll guide you through it.  Don't worry if you come in and cry the entire time, you won't be the first.  And honestly, it's quite normal.  You can certainly expect to feel at home, heard and leave hopeful of your future.

When can I start to see you?

I try to get people in as soon as I can, usually within the week.  I don't see people before noon.  The mornings are my sacred time and are non-negotiable.

OTHER QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE

What is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)?

Marriage and family therapist treat you, the person within the family system.  The family that you come from is known as the system.  With your family system comes patterns of certain behaviors and symptoms like depression, anxiety, alcoholism, drug use, attending college, not going to college, getting married around a certain time and so on.

Have you notice that in your family babies being born around the same time as others before?  Anniversaries around the same time, people dying around the same time of year, some are alcoholics and some are not.  I know, it's pretty cool and freaky at the same time.  If you take the time to create your family map, known as a genogram, you'll see the patterns in your family.

YOU'll learn through a series of interventions what role you play in you family system, how to maintain certain patterns and how to break others if need be.  I'm sure you've heard of the term 'breaking chains'.  You'll most likely do both.

Working with YOU AND YOUR PARTNER,  that changes the way I work.  The relationship is my client not you nor your partner.  Therefore, both family systems come into play and those patterns are looked at, interventions and rituals are created as necessary.

Working with YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, I work with the sum of its parts, meaning the family as a whole and what role each individual plays within your family system.

Do you treat couples?

Yes!  I treat people.

I'm trained to treat individuals, couples, and families.  I specialize in trauma and its affects on the human psyche. Unfortunately, trauma has the ability to seep into your life without you realizing it sometimes.

You may have had experiences such as childhood abuse, witnessed an accident or experienced one, maybe you were abandoned as a child and now you're experiencing the affects of that abandonment and it's affecting your marriage.

Or, maybe you're experiencing marital discord due to an old experience that continues to haunt one partner or the other.  Maybe your family system needs to focus on setting boundaries, hierarchy and structure.

Do you treat children?

Yes, with you.

Let me explain, when your child is acting-out, most of the time, your child is reacting to you and your partner's stuff.  You and your partner are the ones that are in charge of the necessary changes that need to happen in the home and then implement those changes.  Such as boundary setting, expectations and the rules.

Think about this for a second... how can you as the parent expect your child to come to me, a therapist by themselves, as if they're the only one with the problem, correct the problem and then expect them to come back to the same dysfunction that you and your partner are creating day in and day out and act as expected?  That's unfair.  They're the child and you're the adult.

Look, children mirror their parents.  That's why you'll find them doing what you do and saying what you say.  If your child is expressing an unwanted behavior, it's a family problem.  Come in and fix it as a family so that your child doesn't get the message that they're the problem or that they were the cause of your divorce.  I know, I know, that's was a little drastic but I'm not too far from the truth.

It has to start from the top.  That's why it's called family therapy and I can help make sense out of that.

What do I say once I call my insurance company?

Here are some helpful questions you can ask them:

What are my behavioral health benefits?

What is my co-pay?

If Maria is out of network, What percentage does my insurance pay for an out-of-network provider?

What is my deductible?

What happens if I need to cancel?

After you make your appointment, please be conscientious of my time and others.  If you need to cancel your appointment, please provide me with as much notice as possible.  I require 24 hrs.  I understand that life gets in the way sometimes.

When I receive plenty of notice, I'm able to call someone else that may be waiting to be seen due to experiencing an emergency AND you will avoid a cancellation fee of $75 which isn't the full fee!

All I ask is that you be respectful of my time as I'm of yours.
